Play golf with the locals at a Discount

We want to get away, take in a change of scene and mix with different people from the ones we see every day at work. Sometimes we can plan ahead to get the cheap fares but when it all gets too much and we just want to escape we need to look for travel discounts. But some of us have problems deciding what sort of holiday to take. You want to go shopping and your husband wants to play golf but how can we do both? A golf holiday package may appeal but then you perhaps don’t want to be in a group all the time or be surrounded by golfers.


Instead how about booking your flight and then look for Bed and Breakfast accommodation or a GuestHouse near a golf club? If you can find one somewhere near a great city for shopping such as Bristol, Bath, Oxford or Edinburgh then both of you will have something fun to do during the day.

Playing golf at a local club will be an amazing experience! You will meet real English people, many of them completely eccentric and they will be fascinated to meet you. You may even be invited to their home for dinner and to meet the family. English golf clubs have some quaint rules and these are often printed in quite prosaic language and displayed prominently at the bar. There will be conventions, although beware, these are actually enforceable rules! They will expect a certain dress code on the green and possibly a tie and jacket in the bar. English golfers are very old fashioned and many clubs don’t allow ladies in the bar so check beforehand if that may be important to you.

Many golfers like to take a lesson with the pro when they have the chance especially on holiday when they will have the chance to work on the advice they give. You will need to book this up well in advance. Once you have decided on the golf course that you’d like to play, book the pro’s lesson and ask for some names of local Bed and Breakfasts. Imagine being able to play golf in an amazing destination on a discount! Search online and start with your travel, as this is generally the trickiest part to organize.

If you want to experience the local scene, pop into a Church on Sunday morning because you get a completely different feel to visiting at any other time. Many of England’s Churches are ancient and beautiful architecturally. Go and have a coffee after the service and talk with the locals, they will tell you which pubs are best, where to walk and maybe invite you over for a coffee another day.

Bed and Breakfast accommodation is in someone’s own home and it is another way to get inside an English home where you can chat to the family and find out what makes the English tick. The English in London are quite different from the rest of the country, as the New Yorkers would be in the US. Bed and Breakfast will cost about £50 per night for a double room and this will include a gargantuan Breakfast that will set you up for the day, whatever you plan to do.
