There are a lot of factors involved that can influence your success when finding cheap airfares.

From your proximity to a major, regional airport to how flexible your schedule is.  SO before you set out scurrying on the internet, be sure to check out local travel agents and even local newspaper ads so you can easily recognize a discount when you find one.  Next, you have to be ready to jump on a good price once you find it as some of these special deals don’t last very long at all.  Plan you attack and strike when the moment is right.

Here are a few (of many) ways to find cheap airfares online:

Look for package deals
more and more airlines are offering special packages which might include airfare, hotel and car rental.  These can be very good price-wise, but make sure 7you check them out individually before you buy.

Search Major airfare websites like travelocity, expedia orbitz, etc.
Try widening your searches as much as possible to display as many possabilities as you can.  This will enable you to compare from a wider range of prices.  Always check neighboring airports and keep your date/time schedule as flexible as possible.

Buy direct from the airline’s website
Just about every major airline has a section on their website for special offers or deals and are usually updated weekly.  Some offer email notification while others don’t.  Sometimes they even offer specials ONLY if you’re using the internet.  See the menu on this site on the right side with the heading ”special offers” for links to various airline’s “special offers” pages.

Auction sites allow you to “bid” on a plane ticket
This is fairly new, but sites like priceline.com allow you to submit a price you’d be willignto pay for a ticket and they’ll notify you if it’s accepted.

Good luck and happy travels!
